I Opened a Tiny Bottle
Recently my wife brought me a tiny bottle she was having trouble opening. I opened it quickly and easily. She said, “Woah.” I was pleased.
I don’t think my pleasure was for “macho” reasons. You know, “I. Strong. Man. She. Weaker. Sex.” Mindy is a better athlete than I am, and she is crazy strong.
I think I was pleased simply to have the capacity to help someone with whom I’m deeply connected.
In the Christian-y way of looking at things, I remember we all have this capacity in one way or another because we all share in the dynamic power of God’s Spirit.
And, we all have this call to help one another because God makes us interdependent as one Body. No one makes it on their own.
Finally, we all have a constant guide to help us discover how to help because we all have access to the story of Jesus. Christ’s story comes to us through Scripture and through the lives of people who have walked closely with Jesus through the years.
One of the best things you can do for someone else is to encourage them to remember they have the capacity to bless someone they’re connected to in a Jesus-shaped way.
Sometimes it may be opening a pesky bottle. Most times it will be something far more beautiful.
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
