Where to Stand

Depending on where I stand
While in a ship at sea
The horizon lays flat
Or bends to a curve

Depending on whether
You stand with me
I can embrace my world
Or lose my nerve

It's a fiction to believe
We can do anything
Worth doing alone
Like make love
Grow a faith
Or build a home

This I could not see
Until you snapped
My heart of stone
But now I fear
You've been snapped by me

The night has fallen
It's cold, quiet, and dark
There's a space
In the driveway
Where you used to park

The dishes are done
The children down for the night
Three weeks have passed
Since we stood
In the other's sight

I go to the kitchen
Pop open a beer
I sit and stare at my hands
But I'm not filled with fear

Even as I say it
The words are strange
On my ear
But my heart's
Free of fear
Because

Whatever happens between us
Whether we rise or fall
There's a sea of love
And a cloud of glory
Surrounding us all

Whatever happens between us
Whether we rise or fall
There's a sea of love
And a cloud of glory
Surrounding us all

I hear your steps
On the walk
Your hands fumble
With the lock
But I stay here waiting
Solid as a rock
Because

Whatever happens between us
Whether we rise or fall
There's a sea of love
And a cloud of glory
Surrounding us all

Oh, yes, my love
There's an ocean of grace
Into which we're dipped
A hurricane of beauty
Into which we're slipped

If we can just be
Each other's eye
To see
Or
Ear
To hear
We can
At long last
Let go the fear
Because

Whatever happens between us
Whether we rise or fall
There's a sea of love
And a cloud of glory
Surrounding us all
