American Dream

Don’t believe the American Dream
It failed when put to the test
Life’s not buyin’ and sellin’, strivin’ and dyin’
Just to have more than the rest…
But I need a job to buy you a ring
To hire the priest, to make the bells sing

In the hard world
It’s hard to stand tall, undivided, and true
But it’s good to know
God walks with me
And God walks with you

Don’t believe buying a house
Is a deal you’ll never regret
I’ve signed the mortgage and lost it all
I’ve been caught in that net…
But I need four walls, a roof, and a bed
A place to sit my lap
So you can rest your head

In the hard world
It’s hard to stand tall, undivided, and true
But it’s good to know
God walks with me
And God walks with you

Don’t believe in church
Our blindness
The petty games we play
But here I am
In a pew
Before the break of day
Saying a prayer
Or two
For you
For you
At the break of day
At the break of day
For you

In the hard world
It’s hard to stand tall, undivided, and true
But it’s good to know
God walks with me
And God walks with you
