Peter's Confession
One morning by the gray, silent sea,
You called James and John and me.
And we three
Fishermen from Galilee
Left our nets to walk with thee
When you said, “Come; follow me.”
We steered you through Hosannas in the street.
We watched you bless the sweaty crowds,
From your humble victory seat.
We gathered at your table
Shared your bread and blood, your meat.
And I promised love to you
With clear eyes and
A heart without deceit.
But then, as night swallowed day
You asked us by your side to stay
When you went to struggle and pray
And in the dark
With death on its way
We all fell asleep,
And I fell away.
I am Peter,
Your church’s strong, sure rock.
Why not hide my failure
Tucked behind a key and a lock?
Because you, O Jesus,
Are gracious, mighty, and true.
Making even crimes and mistakes
Part of the good news about you,
And your Eastering life
Making all things new.
You called James and John and me.
And we three
Fishermen from Galilee
Left our nets to walk with thee
When you said, “Come; follow me.”
We steered you through Hosannas in the street.
We watched you bless the sweaty crowds,
From your humble victory seat.
We gathered at your table
Shared your bread and blood, your meat.
And I promised love to you
With clear eyes and
A heart without deceit.
But then, as night swallowed day
You asked us by your side to stay
When you went to struggle and pray
And in the dark
With death on its way
We all fell asleep,
And I fell away.
I am Peter,

Tucked behind a key and a lock?
