Wedding Day

On the day we wed
There was a purple dove
Circling overhead
Promising pleasure and pain
And a peace to rise above

When goodbyes we said
The purple dove rose up
Up from our bed
Taking a life we never wanted
Leaving a peace we cannot shed

The Sundays in between
You and I we raised a toast
To a purple dove unseen
To a hidden, holy ghost

The cup against my lips
Your weight against my hips
Broken bread
Lifted overhead and
The tension between
Things living and
Things dead

And a purple dove
Hovers overhead
